Coast Ranges

Japanese: コースト･レーンジズ[山脈]（英語表記）Coast Ranges

A general term for the mountain range that runs along the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of North America, meaning "coast mountain range." It runs north from Southern California in the United States, through Oregon, Washington, Vancouver Island and Queen Charlotte Islands in British Columbia, Canada, to the St. Elias Mountains, Kenai Peninsula, and Kodiak Island in Alaska. It is made up mainly of folded and faulted sedimentary rocks, and has few high peaks, forming a series of hills. The northern part is blessed with heavy rainfall and forests, while the southern part is characterized by long, dry summers and mild winters, and the Central Valley and Willamette Valley are located on the eastern side of the mountain range.

北アメリカ大陸西岸を太平洋に沿って延びる山脈の総称で，〈海岸山脈〉の意。合衆国の南カリフォルニアから北上しオレゴン州，ワシントン州，カナダのブリティッシュ･コロンビア州のバンクーバー島とクイーン･シャーロット諸島を経て，合衆国アラスカ州のセント･エライアス山脈，キーナイ半島，コディアク島へと続く。おもに褶曲や断層を受けた堆積岩からなり，高峰は少なく丘陵の連続体をなす。北部は多雨で森林に恵まれるが，南部では長く乾燥した夏と温和な冬が特徴的であり，山脈東側には，セントラル･バレーやウィラメット･バレーがある。
