Yoshimi Takeuchi

Japanese: 竹内好 - たけうちよしみ
Yoshimi Takeuchi
Born: October 2, 1910, Usuda, Nagano
[Died] March 3, 1977. Tokyo Chinese literature scholar. Graduated from the Department of Chinese Literature at the University of Tokyo in 1934. In the same year, he formed the Chinese Literature Research Society with Takeda Taijun and Okazaki Toshio, rejecting traditional Chinese studies and sinology, and edited the journal Chinese Literature Monthly (later Chinese Literature). He declared his intention not to cooperate with the first Greater East Asia Writers Conference, disbanded the society in 1943, wrote Lu Xun (1944), and was called up as a private soldier. After being discharged from the military in 1946, he became an independent critic and engaged in a wide range of critical activities, including criticizing Japan's "modernity" by comparing it with Chinese literature, advocating "national literature," and discussing contemporary China. In 1953, he became a professor at the Faculty of Humanities at Tokyo Metropolitan University, but resigned in protest of the 1960 Diet vote on the Japan-US Security Treaty. In 1963, he founded the China Society and launched the magazine China, which published essays such as To Know China. In addition to translations of Lu Xun's works, such as Selected Works of Lu Xun (1965, co-translated) and Collected Works of Lu Xun (6 volumes, 1976-78), he also published Takeuchi's Collected Essays (3 volumes, 1966) and Between Japan and China (1973).
