Hiraodai

A limestone plateau centered on the southeastern edge of Kokura Minami Ward, Kitakyushu City. It is about 2 km east to west, 7 km north to south, and has an elevation of about 300 to 680 meters. Along with Akiyoshidai, it is one of Japan's most representative limestone plateaus, and features typical karst topography such as dolines, cullenvelds, and limestone caves. In particular, the area known as Yogunbaru has numerous cullenvelds scattered across the grasslands like flocks of sheep, creating a magnificent landscape. It is included in Kitakyushu Quasi-National Park. Before World War II, it was the site of an army training ground. Senbutsu Shonyudo, Seiryukutsu, and Hiraodai are all designated as national natural monuments. Hiraodai Nature Observation Center and Hiraodai Nature Village are popular tourist spots, but the area is also home to agriculture such as cattle grazing, and limestone mining is active on the western slope. It is about a 50-minute bus ride from JR Kokura Station, or a 10-minute drive from the Kokura Minami Interchange on the Kyushu Expressway.

北九州市小倉南区(こくらみなみく)の南東端を中心とする石灰岩台地。東西約2キロメートル、南北約7キロメートル、標高約300～680メートル。秋吉台(あきよしだい)と並ぶわが国の代表的な石灰岩台地で、ドリーネ、カレンフェルト、鍾乳洞(しょうにゅうどう)など典型的なカルスト地形がみられる。とくに羊群原(ようぐんばる)といわれる一帯は草原上に多数のカレンフェルトがヒツジの群れのように散在し、みごとな景観を呈する。北九州国定公園に含まれる。第二次世界大戦前は陸軍演習場があった。千仏鍾乳洞(せんぶつしょうにゅうどう)、青竜窟(せいりゅうくつ)、平尾台はいずれも国の天然記念物に指定されている。平尾台自然観察センター、「平尾台自然の郷(さと)」などを中心に行楽地としてにぎわう一方、ウシの放牧などの農業が行われ、西側斜面では石灰岩の採掘も盛んである。JR小倉駅前からバスで約50分、また九州自動車道小倉南インターチェンジから車で10分。
