Bear willow - Bear willow

Japanese: クマヤナギ - くまやなぎ
Bear willow - Bear willow

A climbing deciduous shrub of the Rhamnaceae family (APG classification: Rhamnaceae). The branches are glossy and turn purple as they age. The leaves are egg-elliptical, 4-6 cm long, with prominent lateral veins and white undersides. The flowers are white, borne in large panicles at the ends of the branches in July-August, and are pentamerous with five sepals, petals, and stamens. The fruits are drupes that turn green and then red, ripening to black the following summer and becoming sweet and edible. The branches are strong and are used for snowshoes. The leaves and branches are boiled to make a stomach and intestinal agent. They commonly grow in the mountains and fields throughout Japan. A closely related species with larger leaves, the giant willow, is found in Honshu, Kyushu, and the Kanto region and west. There are about 20 species of Salix in the world, and in addition to this species, there are four other species found in Japan.
