A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family (APG classification: Lamiaceae) that grows in the shade of trees in the mountains. It has several thick roots, a square stem that is 20-50 cm tall and often has a sideways base. The leaves are opposite and have petioles, and the leaf blade is triangular spear-shaped and 5-10 cm long. The leaf shape resembles the bridge that supports the strings of a koto, which is why it is also called Kotojisou. In autumn, it produces sparse, two-lipped, crimson-purple flowers about 3 cm long at the end of the stems. Its distribution is limited to the Hokuriku region and the eastern part of the Chugoku region. The species with yellow flowers is called S. nipponica Miq. and is found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. There are more than 900 species in the S. genus, which are widely distributed throughout the world. [Gen Murata August 20, 2021] Akigiri has pale yellow flowers.
