A type of seat to sit on. It is also written as 'Kousa' or 'Godoko'. It is a seat with legs crossed on either side, leather, cloth, rope or string stretched over the buttocks, and foldable for easy transport. This name appears in the ancient Kojiki and Nihonshoki, but the Engishiki states that it was used by military officials attending ceremonies at the Imperial Court, with a tiger skin laid on top, and that the cost of the straps was 'scarlet silk, eight ryo for the base, lacquer, and one go for the base,' which indicates that the legs were lacquered and the straps for the buttocks were made of scarlet rope or string. It is also called 'Shogi' or 'Aibiki', and can refer to a seat used by military commanders outdoors on the battlefield or in the hunting grounds.
