A type of ritual song that was popular in the late Edo period. It is also called "chongare." The lyrics are preceded and followed by the accompaniment words "chongare chongare" and "chobokure chobokure," so it is called "chongare-bushi" or "chobokure-bushi." The origin is unknown. It was characterized by fast speech. It started in Edo around the time of the Kyoho era (1716-1736), and in 1821 (Bunsei 4) it became popular in Osaka, as described in "Setsuyo Kikan." A monk who was a beggar would walk around waving a shakujo (a shakujo) and talk as if singing. In "Shichihenjin" by Baitei Kinka, it is described as "chobokure chongare charamaka style."
