A terrestrial orchid commonly found in low mountains throughout Japan (illustration). The Japanese name comes from the fact that the inflorescence, which bears flowers on one side of the flower stalk, resembles a baton. There are pseudobulbs underground that form a row. There is usually one leaf, oblong, 25-40 cm long, similar to the leaves of Calanthe. In May and June, 10-20 flowers bloom densely on a flower stalk that is 30-50 cm tall. The flowers droop and open in a somewhat trumpet-like shape. The flower color varies from reddish purple to yellowish brown. The lip petal is divided into three lobes at the tip and surrounds the stamen pillar. There are four pollinia. It is distributed from southern Sakhalin and the southern Kuril Islands to Kyushu, southern Korea, China, Taiwan, and the Himalayas, and mainly grows on the forest floor in temperate zones.
