Lake Nukabira

Japanese: 糠平湖 - ぬかびらこ
Lake Nukabira

This artificial lake is located in Kamishihoro Town, under the jurisdiction of the Tokachi Regional Development Bureau in central Hokkaido. It was created by damming the Otofuke River, a tributary of the Tokachi River, with the Nukabira Dam. Construction of the dam began in 1952 (Showa 27) for the purpose of developing power sources, and it is a gravity concrete dam with a height of 76 meters and a crest length of 290 meters. It has a reservoir area of 8.2 square kilometers and a usable storage capacity of 160 million tons, making it the second largest dam in Hokkaido after the Uryu Dam, and an underground waterway leads the water to the Nukabira Power Station (maximum output 42,000 kilowatts), 3 kilometers southeast. It is part of the Daisetsuzan National Park, and the lake shoreline, which is over 30 kilometers in circumference, is surrounded by mountains covered in virgin forests. Fishing and boating are available, and there are facilities such as a national campground. To the west of the southwest coast is Nukabira Onsen, which serves as a base for skiing, mountain climbing, and sightseeing.
