…In 1873, he developed a theory of imaging based on his research into the resolution of lenses, and derived the sine condition for images near the optical axis to be free of aberration. In addition to theoretical research, he worked with Zeiss and Otto Schott (1851-1935) to improve optical glass, developing achromatic lenses, and working with Zeiss to invent and improve many other optical instruments, including microscope illumination devices and immersion microscopes, helping to establish the Zeiss Optical Company's global reputation. After Zeiss's death in 1888, he took over the company's management and was also active as an entrepreneur. …
