A masterpiece by the English novelist W. Scott. Published in 1818. Midlothian is a county in Scotland, and the title can refer to Edinburgh, but in this work it is the common name for the prison in Edinburgh. Set against the backdrop of the Edinburgh riots that occurred in the 18th century, this work depicts the strong conscience of poor farmer's daughter Jeannie Deans, who refuses to give false testimony even to save the life of her sister who is imprisoned on suspicion of infanticide, and her courage and love in traveling alone to London and appealing directly to the Queen to obtain a pardon, creating a true epitome of the uprightness and deep love of Protestants among the Scottish people.

イギリスの小説家W.スコットの代表作。1818年刊。ミドロージアンはスコットランドの州で，題名はエジンバラを指す場合もあるが，この作品ではエジンバラにある牢獄の通称。18世紀に起こったエジンバラの暴動を背景に，貧しい農民の娘ジーニー･ディーンズが嬰児殺しの嫌疑で投獄された妹の生命を救うためにさえ虚偽の証言を拒む凜（りん）とした良心と，ただ一人ロンドンに旅し，王妃に直訴して刑の赦免を得る勇気と愛情を描き，スコットランド民衆の中にあるプロテスタントの廉直と深い愛情を真の典型として創造した。
