Koza Gorge

Japanese: 古座峡 - こざきょう

A gorge in the middle reaches of the Kozagawa River in southern Wakayama Prefecture. It is located in the southern part of Kozagawa Town. It refers to the 20km stretch where the Kozagawa River joins the Mio River and flows eastward. The rhyolite of the Neogene layer has been eroded, and strangely shaped rocks and stones line both banks of this scenic spot. The Tenchu Rock of Kurozu, the Monolith of Oose (a nationally designated natural monument), the Botan Rock of Tsukinose, and the Mushikui Rock of Takaike (a nationally designated natural monument) are particularly famous. An island made of huge rocks in the river at the end of the gorge is considered the object of worship of Kawachi Shrine, and the boat festival in which whaling boats tour the island is famous (→ Mifune Matsuri). There is a hot spring in Tsukinose.

和歌山県南部，古座川中流部の峡谷。古座川町南部に位置。古座川が三尾川を合わせてのち東流する約 20kmの間をさす。新第三紀層の流紋岩が浸食され，両岸に奇岩怪石が連なる景勝地で，蔵土（くろず）の天柱岩，相瀬（おおせ）の一枚岩（国指定天然記念物），月野瀬の牡丹岩，高池の虫喰岩（国指定天然記念物）は特に有名。峡谷末端の川の中にある巨石からなる島は，河内神社の神体とされ，鯨船で島を回る船祭は有名（→御舟祭）。月野瀬に温泉がある。
