The capital of Chiapas state in southeastern Mexico. Population 289,626 (1990). Located on the banks of the Mezcalapa River at an altitude of 540m, it is in a tropical rainforest climate zone. It is the core city of an agricultural region producing corn, sugar cane, tobacco, and coffee. It is also a transportation hub, with the construction of a railway to the Pacific coastal port of Salina Cruz and an international highway from Mexico City to Guatemala via Oaxaca. Chiapas state was established as a missionary and colonized by the Dominican Order in the 16th century, and Las Casas was appointed bishop.
