Gore, Charles
Born: 22 January 1853, Wimbledon
Died January 17, 1932. A theologian and bishop of the Church of England in London. He studied at Oxford University. He was instrumental in the publication of Lux mundi (1889), a collection of theological essays by Oxford theologians, mainly on the incarnation. His essays in the book were criticized by conservatives. He consistently stood for high church doctrine and tried to adapt traditional theology to a new era based on the doctrine of the incarnation. He founded a monastic order in 1892. He was Bishop of Oxford from 1911 to 1919, and Dean of the Faculty of Theology at the University of London from 1924 to 1928. His main works are The Church and the Ministry (89), The Incarnation (91), The Holy Spirit and the Church (1924), and The Reconstruction of Belief (3 volumes, 24).
