Shuto [town] - Shuto

Japanese: 周東[町] - しゅうとう

A former town in Kuga County, eastern Yamaguchi Prefecture. The central settlement of Takamori is on the right bank of the upstream Shimada River. It developed as a post station and market town on the Sanyo Road, and is also served by the Iwakuni Line. Rice is grown in the Kuga Basin, and beef cattle, pigs, and chickens are raised. There are also industries such as sake brewing, metal processing, and sewing. In March 2006, it was incorporated into Iwakuni City along with the towns of Yu, Kuga, Nishiki, Mikawa, Miwa, and Hongo in Kuga County. Area: 144.02 ^km2 . Population: 14,931 (2003).

山口県東部，玖珂(くが)郡の旧町。中心集落の高森は島田川上流右岸にあり，山陽道の宿駅，市場町として発達，岩徳線が通じる。玖珂盆地を中心に米作，肉牛・豚・鶏の飼育が行われる。酒造，金属加工，縫製などの工業も行う。2006年３月玖珂郡由宇町，玖珂町，錦町，美川町，美和町，本郷村と岩国市へ編入。144.02km²。１万4931人（2003）。
