...In contrast, burial sites may be located in areas separate from residential settlements. In some cases, graves are lined or piled on top of the pits after they are filled, but in Hokkaido, Tohoku, and central Japan, there are known to be circular earthen mounds (30-75m in diameter, 0.5-5.4m in height) that surround the pits, and stone circles (stone circles) made of standing stones and several tens of meters in diameter. The bodies were also placed in rectangular coffins made of piled river stones (later and late periods in eastern Japan) or wooden coffins (late periods in Tohoku).
