Order Pelecaniformes, Family Heronidae. Total length 55-65cm. Black beak, pure white body. Black legs, yellow toes. Reproductive plumage (→ Plumage) has beautiful crest (→ Crest) and ornamental feathers on chest and back. Breeds in Japan, temperate and tropical Eurasian continent, parts of Africa, Madagascar, islands of Southeast Asia, Australia, etc. In recent years, it has invaded the Americas and has expanded its distribution greatly. There are few in Europe. Those breeding in the north migrate south to warmer regions to spend winter. In Japan, it breeds south of Honshu, and is the most common species of egret. Most are this species in winter, but some migrate from Japan to the Philippines to spend winter. They are often found in flat rice paddy areas, fields, swamps, and river areas, and breed in groups in bamboo groves, pine forests, and cedar forests. They mainly eat fish, frogs, crayfish, etc.

ペリカン目サギ科。全長 55～65cm。嘴は黒く，体は純白。脚は黒く，趾（あしゆび）は黄色。生殖羽（→羽衣）では美しい冠羽（→羽冠）と胸部および背に飾り羽がある。日本，ユーラシア大陸の温帯から熱帯部，アフリカの一部，マダガスカル島，東南アジアの島々，オーストラリアなどに繁殖分布する。近年アメリカ大陸にも侵入し，分布を大きく広げている。ヨーロッパには少ない。北方で繁殖するものは温暖な地方へ南下して越冬する。日本では本州以南で繁殖しており，シラサギの仲間では最も多く生息する。冬季に見られるのは大部分が本種であるが，日本からフィリピンまで渡って越冬するものもある。平地の水田地帯や田畑，沼地，河川のある地域に多く，竹藪やマツ林，スギ林に集団で繁殖する。おもに魚類，カエル，ザリガニなどを食べている。
