This turtle is classified as a reptile in the genus Acanthopanax. It lives from Central America to North America and there are four subspecies: the Central American snapping turtle, the Florida snapping turtle, the Southern snapping turtle, and the Northern European snapping turtle. Its smooth, curved shell is up to 40-50 centimeters long, and the maximum total length from the tip of its nose to the tip of its tail can reach up to one meter. It has sharp claws and a powerful mouth, and is agile. It can become aggressive on land and can harm people. It has been imported to Japan in large numbers as a pet since the 1960s, and has been confirmed to breed and establish in the Inbanuma water system in Chiba Prefecture. In 2005, it was designated as a specified alien species, and importing, raising, selling, abandoning, etc. are prohibited. 爬虫類のカミツキガメ属に分類されるカメ。中米から北米にかけて生息し、チュウベイカミツキガメ、フロリダカミツキガメ、ナンベイカミツキガメ、ホクベイカミツキガメの4亜種がある。滑らかで曲線型の甲羅(こうら)の長さは最大40〜50センチメートルで、鼻先から尻尾の先までの最大全長は1メートルに及ぶこともある。鋭い爪と強力な口を持ち、動きが俊敏で、陸上では気性が荒くなるため人に危害を及ぼすこともある。日本には1960年代よりペットとして大量に輸入され、千葉県印旛沼水系で繁殖・定着が確認されている。2005年、特定外来生物に指定され、輸入・飼育・販売・遺棄などが禁止となった。印旛沼水系では、毎年300匹に及ぶカミツキガメが捕獲・駆除されている。
