Emperor Gosaga

Japanese:
Emperor Gosaga
Born: February 26, 1220, Kyoto
[Died] February 17, 1272. The 88th Emperor of Kyoto (reigned 1242-46). His name was Kunihito. He was the son of Emperor Tsuchimikado. His mother was the posthumous Empress Dowager Minamoto Michiko (posthumously named daughter of Minister of the Left Minamoto Michimune). In 1281, after his father, the retired Emperor Tsuchimikado, was transferred to Shikoku due to the Jōkyū War, he was raised by his maternal grandfather Minamoto Michikata, and after Michikata's death, he moved to the Tsuchimikado residence of his grandmother, Jōmyōmon'in Minamoto Zaiko. When Emperor Shijō died (42), the succession of the throne could not be decided, so the regent Hojō Yasutoki dispatched an envoy to Kyoto to eliminate the various opinions and to decide on a successor. After ascending to the throne, he performed the Hakkes of the Lotus Sutra at Anrakushin-in Temple, bestowed the posthumous title of Emperor Gotoba, and prayed for the repose of his soul. In 1283, he performed the Hakkes again to console the spirit of his father, Emperor Tsuchimikado. In the same year, he handed over the throne to his son, Prince Kuni (Emperor Gofukakusa), and ruled as an innkeeper for two generations, the Gofukakusa and Kameyama eras. The emperor was a man of gentle character and did not dare oppose the shogunate. He also loved his eldest son, Prince Kuni, more than his younger brother, Prince Tsunehito (Emperor Kameyama), and appointed Emperor Gofukakusa's son, Prince Yohito, as crown prince, which marked the beginning of the conflict between the Jimyoin and Daikakuji lines. He was a devout Buddhist, and in Bun'ei 5 (68), he became a monk and adopted the Buddhist name Sokaku. He was well versed in the principles of various sects, and often traveled to Koyasan and Kumano, and also copied and offered sutras and treatises. He was skilled in waka poetry, and ordered Fujiwara no Motoie, Tameie, and others to compile the "Shoku Kokin Wakashu." Furthermore, the emperor's poems are included in many imperial anthologies, including the "Shoku Gosenshu." His tomb is located in Saga Nanryo in Maki-no-Baba-cho, Saga Tenryu-ji Temple, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City.
