Kosaka mine

Japanese: 小坂鉱山 - こさかこうざん
Kosaka mine

Located in Kosaka Town, Kazuno County, in northeastern Akita Prefecture, this is one of Japan's leading black ore mines. It is said to have been discovered by a farmer in 1829 (Bunsei 12). The mine was directly managed by the Morioka Domain, and in 1869 (Meiji 2) it became government-run, with a Western-style smelter being built the following year. Open-cut mining began in 1908 (Meiji 41), and it became Japan's largest copper mine. Mining ceased in 1946 (Showa 21), but after 1959 new deposits were discovered and the mine was operated by Dowa Mining Co., Ltd., but closed again in 1990 (Heisei 2). It has since been in operation as Kosaka Smelting and Refining. The former Kosaka Mine Office has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
