Pietro Bonfante

1864‐1932
A modern Italian Roman law scholar. After graduating from the University of Pavia, he became a professor at the University of Rome in 1917, and later served as a member of the Academic Academy of Rome and other important positions. At the same time, he conducted research with a wide range of academic knowledge and trained many excellent researchers, including Giovanni Rotondi and Pietro De Francisci, making a great contribution to leading the study of Roman law in Italy to its current prosperity. He is famous for emphasizing the historical changes in the function of the legal system and for his attempt to explain the structure and historical development of Roman family law and inheritance law by analogy with the ancient Roman family to a sovereign state.

現代イタリアのローマ法学者。パビア大学を経て1917年ローマ大学教授となり，さらにローマ学士院会員その他の要職に就くと同時に，幅広い学識をもって研究を行い，また，ロトンディGiovanni Rotondi，デ･フランチッシPietro De Francisciらのすぐれた研究者を多数育成し，イタリアにおけるローマ法研究を現在の隆盛に導くことに多大の功績を残した。法制度の機能の歴史的変化を強調し，また，古代ローマの家族を主権国家と類比してローマ家族法および相続法の構造とその歴史的展開を説明しようとした見解が有名である。
