Pietro Bonfante
1864‐1932
A modern Italian Roman law scholar. After graduating from the University of Pavia, he became a professor at the University of Rome in 1917, and later served as a member of the Academic Academy of Rome and other important positions. At the same time, he conducted research with a wide range of academic knowledge and trained many excellent researchers, including Giovanni Rotondi and Pietro De Francisci, making a great contribution to leading the study of Roman law in Italy to its current prosperity. He is famous for emphasizing the historical changes in the function of the legal system and for his attempt to explain the structure and historical development of Roman family law and inheritance law by analogy with the ancient Roman family to a sovereign state.
