Also written as hikaririn-gyo. A general term for fish belonging to the soft-finned or holostei of the Actinopterygii subclass of the Osteichthyes, whose bodies are covered with hard, diamond-shaped scales. The surface of the scales is a hard, shiny, enamel-like ganoine layer, with a spongy dentin underneath and a boney substrate. Scaled fish appeared in the Silurian Period of the Paleozoic Era and flourished in the Mesozoic Era, but their numbers suddenly decreased in the Tertiary Period of the late Cenozoic Era. Currently, only a few species live in rivers and lakes east of the Rocky Mountains in North America, as well as in Cuba. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
