America's first manned space flight program. Seven astronauts were selected as the first group of astronauts, and on May 5, 1961, AB Shepard made America's first successful suborbital flight (15 minutes). On February 20, 1962, JH Glenn became the first man to enter satellite orbit in the Mercury satellite Friendship 7, orbiting the Earth three times, followed by MS Carpenter and WM Schirra, who also orbited the Earth in Mercury satellites. On May 15, 1963, LG Cooper's Faith 7 orbited the Earth 22 times and returned, completing the program. After this, the two-seater Gemini program began.
