They are a Bantu-speaking agricultural people living on the western slope of Mount Elgon, northeast of Lake Victoria, near the border with Uganda and Kenya. They cultivate millet, sorghum, and plantain bananas. Their population is estimated at over one million. Although their area is small, their population density is quite high, and land shortages have long been a serious problem. Descent and inheritance are traced through the patrilineage, and they have a segmented lineage system in which relationships between local groups are expressed in the language of their descent. Traditionally, they have not had a centralized political form, and leaders are heads of small, non-hereditary descent groups. They are known for their complex initiation rites for men.
