Collection of ancient and modern books - Kokontoshoshusei

China's largest encyclopedia (common book). 10,000 volumes. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty (1662-1722), Chen Menglei (Chinbourai) was ordered by the emperor to extract articles from all books, ancient and modern, of China and compile them by subject. The original name was "Yibian," but the Kangxi Emperor renamed it "Imperially Approved Collection of Ancient and Modern Books." Jiang Tingxi and others further revised it under the orders of the Yongzheng Emperor, and it was completed in December 1725. The contents are divided into 6 sections and 32 texts, including (1) the Calendar and Symbols section, the Qianxiang Code, the Annual Code, the Calendar Code, and the Code of General Signs; and (2) the Fangyu Code, including the Kunyu Code, the Occupation Code, the Mountain and River Code, and the Descendants Code, which are further subdivided into 6,109 sections. Each section is roughly divided into vocabulary, general discussion, charts, biographies, art and literature, selections of poems, chronicles, miscellaneous records, and extra sections. This book is very voluminous, so it is useful for looking up certain topics, but it is necessary to always refer to the original text. In addition to the Yongzheng edition, there is also a Guangxu 10th year (1884) edition, and the Gujin Toshushu Ingredients Catalog (1912, compiled by the Ministry of Education) is useful for identifying topics.

中国最大の百科事典（類書）。1万巻。清(しん)の康煕(こうき)年間（1662～1722）陳夢雷(ちんぼうらい)が勅命によって、中国古今のあらゆる図書から記事を抜き出して、事項別に編纂(へんさん)した。もとの名は『彙編(いへん)』といったが、康煕帝は『欽定(きんてい)古今図書集成』と名を改めた。さらに、蒋廷錫(しょうていしゃく)らが雍正帝(ようせいてい)の命を受け、増訂して1725年12月完成した。内容は、(1)暦象彙編―乾象(けんしょう)典、歳功典、暦法典、庶徴典、(2)方輿(ほうよ)彙編―坤輿(こんよ)典、職方典、山川典、辺裔(へんえい)典など6彙編32典に分けられ、さらに6109部に細分されている。各部はほぼ彙考、総論、図表、列伝、芸文(げいもん)、選句、紀事、雑録、外編に区分して記載してある。本書は非常に膨大なものなので、ある事項をみるうえでは便利であるが、かならず原典にあたる必要がある。雍正版のほか光緒(こうしょ)一〇年（1884）版があり、事項検出には『古今図書集成分類目録』（1912・文部省編）などが便利である。
