New Kabuki Juhachiban

New Kabuki Juhachiban

A group of Kabuki plays established by Ichikawa Danjūrō 7th and 9th. In this case, juhachiban means something you're good at, so the number far exceeds 18, and some say there are 32 or 40. Danjūrō 7th had planned to select 18 of his own best or memorable works in addition to the family art of his ancestors, the "Kabuki Juhachiban," but he passed away after selecting only two works, "Tora no Maki" and "Rensō Monogatari." His son Danjūrō 9th followed his father's wishes and selected many of his best works that he had premiered, naming them "Shin Kabuki Juhachiban." They are characterized by a large number of historical plays that reflect the new movement for theater reform, and sophisticated dance plays based on Noh and Kyogen. Today, titles that could be given to such works include "The Seven Laughs of Shihei," "Earthquake Kato," "The Sanada Harinukizutsu," "Sakai's Drum," "Goro of Shikikawa," "Egara Dialogue," "Takatoki," "Shigemori's Admonition," "Tako no Tametomo," and "Nakamitsu." His works include "The Tale of Ise," "The Tale of Mikasa," "The Tale of Mikasa," "The Female Camphor Tree," and other dance dramas such as "Kagamijishi," "Omori Hikoshichi," "Funabenkei," "Momijigari," "Suouotoshi," "Ninmbakama," "Fukitorizuma," and "Tsurigitsune."
