…A microscopic structure found in all coelenterates except comb jellies. Many of them exist within an individual animal, and serve the functions of capturing food and defending against predators and other enemies. Cnidocytes are cell organelles contained individually within cells called nemarocytes (cnidoblasts). They are generally spherical or ovoid, but there are more than 20 different types of morphology. The most common of these nematocysts is the penetrating nematocyst (or ordinary nematocyst), which contains a single hollow stinging thread in its lumen. This thread is reversed and projected out by a certain stimulus, and is instantly shot into the body of the target animal, through which the venom in the lumen is injected. …
