Polish politician and educator between the two world wars. Last president of parliamentary democracy. One of the founders of the Polish Socialist Party, he was active in the youth, labor, and cooperative movements. He fled to Western Europe from 1892-95 and 1899-1906, and lived in Russia from 1915-18, where he led the Polish organization in Moscow. After independence, he became close to the right wing of the Polish Peasant Party. He served as Minister of the Interior from 1919 to 1920, and became president in 1922. He was forced to step down in May 1926 after Piłsudski's military coup. He served as professor at the Warsaw Agricultural Economics College from 1926 to 1939.

両大戦間期ポーランドの政治家，教育者。議会制民主主義最後の大統領。ポーランド社会党の創設者の一人で，青年運動，労働運動，協同組合運動で活躍する。1892‐95,99‐1906年西欧諸国に亡命し，1915‐18年にはロシアに滞在，モスクワのポーランド人組織を指導する。独立後ポーランド農民党右派に接近。19‐20年内相を務め，22年大統領となる。26年5月ピウスツキの軍事クーデタによって下野する。26‐39年ワルシャワ農業経済専門学校教授を務める。
