1869‐1953 Polish politician and educator between the two world wars. Last president of parliamentary democracy. One of the founders of the Polish Socialist Party, he was active in the youth, labor, and cooperative movements. He fled to Western Europe from 1892-95 and 1899-1906, and lived in Russia from 1915-18, where he led the Polish organization in Moscow. After independence, he became close to the right wing of the Polish Peasant Party. He served as Minister of the Interior from 1919 to 1920, and became president in 1922. He was forced to step down in May 1926 after Piłsudski's military coup. He served as professor at the Warsaw Agricultural Economics College from 1926 to 1939.
