A city located in the middle of Kyoto Prefecture, occupying the middle reaches of the Yura River. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. The city center is located in the eastern part of the Fukuchiyama Basin, and is said to have been the residence of the Ayabe people in ancient times, and was the center of sericulture and silk-reeling. It developed as a castle town of the Kuki clan, and traces of that time remain. After the establishment of Gunze Silk Mill in 1896, a sericulture testing center and a cocoon inspection center were established, and the modern silk-reeling industry developed rapidly. In recent years, the chemical fiber and hosiery industries have flourished, and nylon socks and underwear are being produced in large quantities. With the construction of industrial parks, machinery, metal, and precision equipment industries have also advanced. Wood, matsutake mushrooms, and sweetfish are also produced. Kurotani is a traditional producer of Japanese paper. Ten of the 12 Shikinaisha shrines in Ikaruga County, Tanba Province, are located within the city, and ancient temples include Komyo-ji Temple of the Shingon sect Daigo school and Ankoku-ji Temple of the Rinzai sect Tofukuji school. The Omotokyo headquarters Baishoen (missionary site) is located here. The Sanin Main Line runs through here, the Maizuru Line branches off here, and the Maizuru-Wakasa Expressway is located here. Area: 347.10 ^km2 . Population: 35,836 (2010).

京都府中部，由良川中流域を占める市。1950年市制。中心市街は福知山盆地東部にあり，古く漢部(あやべ)の居住地と伝えられ，養蚕・製糸の中心であった。九鬼氏の城下町として発達，その面影が残る。1896年郡是製糸創設後，蚕業試験場，繭検査所も置かれ近代的製糸業が飛躍的に発展，近年は化学繊維，メリヤス工業が盛んで，ナイロン靴下，下着を多産。工業団地の建設が進み，機械，金属，精密機器工業も進出。木材，マツタケ，アユも産する。黒谷は伝統的な和紙の産地。丹波国何鹿(いかるが)郡の式内社12座のうち10座が市域にあり，古刹に真言宗醍醐派光明寺，臨済宗東福寺派安国寺などがある。大本教本部梅松苑（宣教の場）がある。山陰本線が通じ舞鶴線が分岐，舞鶴若狭自動車道がある。347.10km²。３万5836人（2010）。
