…In 1906, he founded the Utopia (monastery) in Créteil, a suburb of Paris, together with Duhamel and Billdrach, and lived a self-sufficient communal life with his companions, forming the so-called “Abbaye School.” During World War I, he maintained an anti-war stance, and in 1918 published a collection of poems called “The Blood of Others.” After the war, he joined the left, and in 1922, together with Romain Rolland and others, he founded the magazine “Europe,” and remained its editor-in-chief until it ceased publication in 1940.
