A port city in the northern part of the Gulf of Taranto in Puglia, southern Italy. After the unification of Italy, a naval base was built and the city saw rapid population growth and urbanization. In 1940 during World War II, the city was bombed by British forces. Since 1960, it has become an important base for the southern industrialization policy, attracting heavy industries such as steelworks, and air and marine pollution has become a problem. It was once the most important Greek colony in southern Italy, and was conquered by Rome in the 3rd century BC and called Tarentum. There is an 11th century cathedral. It has a population of 200,154 (2011).

イタリア南部，プーリア州ターラント湾北部の港湾都市。イタリア統一後海軍基地が建設されてから急速に人口増大と都市化が進んだ。第２次大戦中の1940年に英軍の空爆を被った。1960年以後，南部工業化政策の重要拠点となり，製鉄所はじめ重工業の誘致が進み，大気・海洋汚染が問題となっている。古くは南イタリアで最も重要なギリシア植民市で，前３世紀にローマに征服されタレントゥムと呼ばれた。11世紀の聖堂がある。20万154人（2011）。
