Drosicha corpulenta (English name)

Japanese: オオワラジカイガラムシ（英語表記）Drosicha corpulenta

An insect of the Hemiptera order, family Coccidae. Sexually dimorphic, adult males have a pair of soot-colored wings and at first glance resemble dipterans. Adult females are almost identical to those in the larval stage, but are wingless. They are oval in shape, and are named after the shape of the body segments that resemble straw sandals. They are the largest scale insect in Japan, reaching a body length of 10-15 mm when mature, and their body surface is covered with a pale, powdery secretion. They have legs throughout their lives, can walk and move, and have spiracles on their abdomens, making them considered primitive scale insects. Native to Japan, they parasitize the branches and trunks of oaks, chestnuts, Japanese chestnuts, and Quercus phillyraeoides, and are often found in large numbers in urban parks.
