Shiba (Japanese lawn grass)

A perennial grass of the family Poaceae (APG classification: Poaceae). The culm is tough, and the runners creep long along the ground and branch. In May and June, short flower stalks emerge from the leaf axils. The inflorescence is erect and 3-5 cm long. The spikelets are asymmetrically ovate, about 3 mm long, about half as wide as the length, flattened on both sides, and contain one floret. The first glume is degenerate, and the second glume is leathery and shiny. Both the inner glume and lodicule are degenerate. It grows in sunny grasslands and is distributed in Japan, the Korean peninsula, and China. It is cultivated as a lawn lawn along with other species of the same genus, such as Koshun-shiba (Hengchun-shiba), which has thin spikelets, Korean-shiba (Korean-shiba), which has thread-like leaves less than 1 mm wide, and Onishiba (Onishiba), which has large spikelets. At flowering, unlike other grasses, the style and stamens emerge from the apex of the spikelet, not from both sides. At first, only the pistil emerges and matures to reach the female stage, after which the style withers and the stamens extend and transform into the male stage. The spikelet turns purple during this period.
