An independent administrative institution established for the purpose of promoting international cultural exchange. It was established in 1972 as a special corporation under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and became an independent administrative institution on October 1, 2003. Its purpose is to contribute to the development of a good international environment and the maintenance and development of Japan's harmonious foreign relations by deepening foreign countries' understanding of Japan, promoting international mutual understanding, and contributing to the world in culture and other fields. Its main activities include (1) sending and inviting people for the purpose of international cultural exchange, (2) supporting, facilitating, and promoting the Japanese language in overseas Japanese studies, (3) implementing, supporting, facilitating, and participating in events for the purpose of international cultural exchange, (4) creating, collecting, exchanging, and distributing materials to introduce Japanese culture overseas and other materials necessary for international cultural exchange, (5) supporting the development of facilities for the purpose of international cultural exchange, supporting the purchase of items used for international cultural exchange, and donating these items, and (6) conducting surveys and research necessary for international cultural exchange. Following its transformation into an independent administrative institution, the ASEAN Cultural Center underwent organizational reform in May 2004, reorganizing its business divisions into three groups: "Cultural and Arts Exchange," "Japanese Language," and "Japanese Studies and Intellectual Exchange." Established in 1990 to introduce Asian culture, primarily ASEAN countries, to Japan, the ASEAN Cultural Center changed its name to the Asia Center in 1995, marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II, and expanded its business scope to cover the entire region of Asia. In addition to cultural introduction projects such as art exhibitions, film festivals, and stage performances, the Center also promotes intellectual exchange and supports cultural development.
