A geological period. The period when coal was formed in the Appalachian coalfields in North America. Named by HS Williams (1891). It is considered an independent period in North America, but is not recognized internationally. It spans from about 340 million years ago to 286 million years ago, roughly equivalent to the Late Carboniferous Period. It is divided into five eras based on marine strata.
