As Boulle's fame grew, he received constant orders not only from France, but also from foreign royal families such as Philip V of Spain and the Elector of Bavaria. His furniture designs are characterized by the fact that they broke away from the subordinate status of architectural design of the previous era and expressed independent artistic design, and that he decorated his furniture with "Boulle marquetrie", which is an inlay of brass, tortoiseshell, and shells on a black ebony background to express motifs such as mythology, floral patterns, arabesques, and scrollwork. His representative works include the commodes he made for Louis XIV's bedroom at the Grand Trianon in the Palace of Versailles in 1708-09, the armoire in the Louvre Museum, and the desk for the Elector of Bavaria.
