One of the chief gods of ancient Egypt. Amon means "mystery". He is also called Amun. Originally, he was only a local god of Thebes, but when the 12th Dynasty unified the kingdom with Thebes as its capital, his worship spread throughout Egypt and he merged with Re, the supreme sun god of Heliopolis, and became "King of the Gods" under the name Amon-Re. For this reason, the Greeks identified him with Zeus. Amon's power reached its peak in the New Kingdom, but faded away with the religious reforms of Akhenaten. After the death of the king, he was revived, and during the 21st Dynasty, Amon's high priest became the leader of the Theban priests. His spouse was Mut, the mother of the gods with the head of a lioness. He was first depicted as a ram-headed god, and after the Middle Kingdom, he was depicted as a human with a pair of long feathers on his head and a drooping beard. His sacred animals were the ram and the Nile goose. Amon |
