North Anatolian Fault

North Anatolian Fault

...Recent earthquakes include the 1978 Tabas earthquake ( M 7.7, 15,000 deaths). In Turkey, the North Anatolian Fault, which stretches 800 km from east to west, has been hit by six M 7 class earthquakes every 1 to 10 years since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake ( M 8.0, 33,000 deaths), causing great damage. There have been many other major earthquakes on other faults as well.

From [Earthquake Fault]

... The first earthquake fault to be scientifically recorded was the Neodani Fault during the 1891 Nobi earthquake, and since then, about 12 clear examples have been known in Japan (table). Well-known examples around the world include the San Andreas Fault in the United States and the North Anatolian Fault in Turkey, and more than 100 faults on land have been scientifically reported to date. Investigations of many earthquake faults have shown that they are not faults that arose for the first time during an earthquake, but faults that existed before and have been reactivated, that is, active faults, and that the movement during an earthquake is in the same direction as the fault's past movement. ...
