Modern Theatre

… The 18th century, when Rousseau lived, was a time when large permanent theaters, including opera houses, were being built one after another all over Europe. The medieval theaters that had no adequate roofs or walls were being replaced by the new "modern theaters," which were sealed off from the outside world by thick stone walls and ceilings and whose interiors were further divided into a stage and an auditorium by a proscenium arch. They quickly swept across Europe, and in the 19th century, with the imperialist expansion of the European powers, they spread to non-European countries, such as Asia and Latin America. …
