Artisan Song Contest - Shokunin Utaawase

Japanese: 職人歌合 - しょくにんうたあわせ

This is a fictitious poetry contest in which people of various professions are divided into left and right sides and compose waka poems, and is accompanied by pictures. In the Middle Ages, there are five works in four categories: Tohokuin Poetry Contest No. 5 and No. 12, which were created between the 13th and 15th centuries, as well as Tsuruoka Hojoe Poetry Contest, No. 32 Poetry Contest, and No. 71 Poetry Contest. Along with its pictorial expression, it is an important historical source of medieval social history, as it defines what profession is defined as a "craftsman" and allows us to infer the social class of the person from the content of the poems and the pairings. It was revived in the Edo period by scholars of Japanese classics, and the style was passed down to "Shokunin Zukke," and many successor works have been created since the early modern period.

さまざまな職能民が左方・右方に分かれて和歌を詠むという形をとる仮託の歌合で，絵を伴う。中世のものに，13世紀から15世紀にかけて成立した《東北院歌合》５番本，同12番本をはじめ，《鶴岡放生会歌合》《三十二番歌合》《七十一番歌合》の４種５作品がある。どのような職を〈職人〉と定義しているか，歌の内容や番(つが)いの組合せによってその社会階層が推定できるなど，その図像表現とともに，中世の社会史の重要な史料。国学者によって江戸時代に復活，また趣向が〈職人尽絵〉に引き継がれるなど，近世以降も多くの後継の作品が作られた。
