Fernando Amorsolo

Fernando Amorsolo
1892‐1972
Philippine painter. Born in Paco, Manila. Graduated from the College of Art at the University of the Philippines in 1914. In 1919, he received a scholarship to study in Spain, where he studied for one year at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. His style was heavily influenced by Spanish masters Velázquez and Impressionists such as Manet and Renoir. He left behind many genre paintings and portraits, but his most famous works are those depicting rural life. The exoticism of American colonists towards idyllic tropical rural life and the nostalgia for the good old days of Filipinos who were forced to undergo rapid change under American rule greatly influenced the tendencies of his work.
