[Development of atomic clocks and the definition of the second]
The world's first atomic clock was a prototype built in 1949 by the US National Bureau of Standards (NBS) that used the absorption lines of ammonia molecules. Around the same time, the NBS also succeeded in an experiment using cesium atoms, and then L. Essen of the UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) built an atomic clock based on the same principle, and for about three years from 1955, it was compared with ephemeris time, which was adopted as the time standard at the time. This device is said to be the world's first practical atomic clock.
