The name was popular during the Heian period, and refers to a temple where the Emperor's prayers are performed. In contrast to the Kandaiji, these were run as private temples for the Imperial family (including the retired Emperor, Empress, and Imperial Princes), and also became the residence of the Emperor after he abdicated.
