This museum aims to promote the dissemination and research of transportation knowledge by showing the development and history of transportation such as railways, automobiles, ships, and aircraft through actual objects, models, photographs, documents, and other materials. It was located in Kanda-Sudacho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, but closed on May 14, 2006. In 1921, the Railway Museum first opened under the elevated tracks at the north exit of Tokyo Station as part of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the railway, and in 1936 it moved to Kanda-Sudacho. After many changes, it was renamed the Transportation Museum. Since 1971, it has been managed by the Transportation Culture Promotion Foundation. The first floor is dedicated to railway materials from each era, and displays include an actual Murray compound steam locomotive, a replica of a steam car model presented by Matthew Calbraith Perry, foreign railway models, and monorails. The second floor was dedicated to ships and automobiles, with models of frontier canoes, Senkoku ships, hydrofoils, and other vessels, as well as models and examples showing the evolution of automobiles, while the third floor displayed various historical materials showing the history of aviation, transportation of the future, and travel in the past. The museum's collection totaled over 200,000 items, with about 2,000 items on display at any one time.
