Winter wind - Kigarashi

Japanese:
Winter wind - Kigarashi
This is one of the main pieces of Tozan-ryu shakuhachi music. It was composed in November 1923 by Nakao Tozan, the founder of the Tozan-ryu school. After the Great Kanto Earthquake, standing on the hill of Shiba Park in Tokyo, which had been reduced to burnt ruins, Nakao was overcome with emotion as the wind blew in, and composed this piece as an improvisation. The piece is for shakuhachi solo and consists of one section. It is in 4/4 time throughout, but the tempo starts out slow and gradually speeds up. Although it is a short piece, it beautifully expresses emotions such as desolation and cold, and is said to be one of the masterpieces of the Tozan-ryu honkyoku. [Kamisango Yuko]
