German poet. Born in Bendisch-Helmsdorf to a forest ranger. After attending university in Berlin and Leipzig, he worked for an insurance company in Berlin, but in 1895 he devoted himself to writing. In 1901 he moved to Blankenese, a suburb of Hamburg, where he lived until his death. In 1891 he published his first collection of poems, Salvation, which marked the beginning of his friendship with Lilienkron. Dehmel's work began with a socially charged naturalistic tendency and a Nietzschean expression of the individual's ego-experience, but his literature was characterized more by a glorification of the power of Eros and its spiritual, cosmic, and even religious significance. His most famous works include the collection of poems Woman and the World (1896) and the novel Two Men (1903), based on his love affair with Ida, who became his second wife. At the age of 50, he volunteered for the First World War as an enthusiastic soldier, but his disillusioned war experiences are recorded in Between Nations and Men (1919).
