...The central settlement of Shimizu is a medieval castle town built in 1476 (8th year of Bunmei) by the Shimizu clan, a branch of the Mogami clan, and flourished in the early modern period as a river port on the Mogami River. The Nagamatsu copper mine was opened in the Keicho period (1596-1615), and the Okura mine was opened in the Meiwa period (1764-72), supporting the finances of the Shinjo domain. It developed further in the Meiji period, but closed around 1960.
