Chromite - Chromite

Chromite - Chromite

One of the most important ores of chromium (Cr). A member of the spinel group of minerals. It is equivalent to the chromium substitute of magnetite. It forms massive or layered aggregates in feldspar-poor parts of basic rocks and ultrabasic rocks, forming large deposits, and is also found in carbonate rocks associated with these rocks, special metamorphosed skarns, and meteorites. It is also found in the lunar mare basalts on the surface of the moon. In basic rocks, it occurs together with serpentine, forsterite, and diopside, and in metamorphosed skarns it occurs together with quartz, diopside, and chromite (the conventional belief that it does not coexist with quartz is incorrect). In Japan, chromite is found in part of the Akaishi Mine (closed) in Doi-cho, Uma-gun, Ehime Prefecture (now Shikoku Chuo City), and there are also end-members in the Yoshii area of Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture. It is named after its main component, the element chromium, which is found in crocodile ore.
