Kogake

Japanese:
Kogake
The main line of the Murakami Genji. Seiga family. Minamoto Akifusa's daughter, Kenshi, became the empress of Emperor Shirakawa and gave birth to Emperor Horikawa. Kenshi's older brother, Masazane, became the Grand Minister of State and was later revered as the founder of the Koga family. By the early 12th century, he had a residence in Kyoto's Koga (present-day Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City), and was called "Kuga Grand Minister of State," which is where the family name comes from. He held a high official position within the Genji clan, and often served as the head of the Genji family and the head priests of Shogakuin and Junnain. In the early Kamakura period, the Tsuchimikado, Nakanoin, and Rokujo families were established as branch families, and in the Edo period, branch families such as the Iwakura, Chigusa, Higashikuze, and Kuze families were established. The "Kuga Family Documents" extend up to the Meiji period, but most of the documents from the Heian period to the Azuchi-Momoyama period are valuable in learning about the transition and maintenance of the family estates of court nobles and aristocrats. →Kuga Manor → Related article Kaito Manor
