It is the capital of the province of the same name, which occupies the southeastern part of the Baixo Alentejo region in southern Portugal. It has a population of 19,682 (1981). It was already known as Pax Julia in Roman times. It came under Muslim control in the early 8th century, but was recaptured by the Portuguese in 1162. Since then, it has been the political and economic center of the region, and the trade of agricultural products and livestock has become the city's main economic activity.
